Deleuze and the Use of the Genetic Algorithm in Architecture

Manuel de Landa

This article unravels the components of genetic materials and offspring within the digital environment. Deleuze cautions that the technologies of today easily provide the ability to create breeding forms for utilization of design but must utilize the population not the individual to generate the matrix of the form. The diagramming of the abstract vertebrate and abstract building defines the abstract analysis of both the form of the structure as well as the components which comprise the entity itself. It is only through the utilization of biological, mathematics, and forms of science which will allow for designers to hack into the genetic process of breeding a multiplicity of entities.

It is the integration of extensive, intensive, and topological thinking which analyses the breeding population and its constant regeneration of form. An issue brought up is the recurring same species within the population once there are a series of interesting geometries created.
